Chamberlin Hotel will be converted to a retirement center The historic Chamberlin Hotel at Fort Monroe will be transformed into a retirement center with emphasis on the retired military. The hotel, which offers a view of the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay and is visible from the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel, has been in Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection for the past 17 months. It has been purchased by OPC Hampton LLC, which signed a 50-year ground lease agreement with the Army. The purchase price was not disclosed. That clears the way for the bankruptcy court to approve the transfer of ownership of the Chamberlin, effective today, according to a statement by the Army Corps of Engineers. The ground lease was approved through an agreement between the State Historic Preservation Office and the installation commander at Fort Monroe. The agreement allows the Chamberlin to be used as a retirement center with initial emphasis on unassisted living. Approval also was granted to construct a building adjacent to the hotel to accommodate assisted living. A three-level parking garage also will be built, with Fort Monroe staff using the third level.
