Incorporated in 1900, the town was named for its most prominent citizen - Harrison Phoebus. Although Phoebus merged with the City of Hampton in 1952, it still retains much of its small town charm. To preserve our past and encourage investment in our future, the Phoebus Improvement League has funded the creation of a historic district that encompasses the core business area and many residences. We are happy to announce that the Phoebus Historic District was listed on the Virginia Landmark Register in September, 2006. As of December 1, 2006, the district also achieved national status and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places by the National Park Service. Already, historic district tax credit projects are underway as new investment comes to Phoebus, and a once-quiet main street area is beginning to glow. Coupled with upcoming decisions on the future use of Fort Monroe and a new master plan for our community, and Phoebus is drawing new attention and interest. In Phoebus, there are exciting opportunities for investment and a new way of life. Come. See for yourself.
